Engaged | Alice & Brian

Does anyone else feel like 2017 is flying by?!  It seems like just yesterday Alice and I were in the very beginning stages of planning, chatting about the color scheme and bridesmaid dresses, yet here we are - it's wedding week!

On Saturday Alice and Brian will be saying "I Do" at the church she grew up in, Myers Park Baptist and then continuing the celebration at Quail Hollow Club.  Their creative team is incredible and the garden-style decor is going to be a stunner!

In celebration of wedding week, I just had to share a few of my favorites from their engagement session with Alicia White.  And of course, the cameo appearance of Alice's rescue pup, Rose, was not to be left out :)

Cinco De Mayo Anniversary Session

Happy Cinco De Mayo!  Today's post is a little different than our usual posts full of weddings, engagements, and bridal beauties.  A few weeks ago, Southern Savvy partnered with a few of Charlotte's most talented wedding creatives to showcase a styled backyard anniversary session, inspired by Cinco De Mayo - you just can't go wrong with margs and guac.  Do you know what I love about stepping outside of our wedding planning box?  Highlighting what comes next.  Y'all the wedding is going to be one of the highest points in your life, but don't forget about the real adventure - building a life together.  Make sure to follow the gallery below to the very bottom to check out where Brandi and CG's adventure has taken them so far!

What are your plans for Cinco De Mayo?  Unsure if you want to wait in line at your favorite Mexican restaurant?  We've got ya covered!  See below for our Cucumber Rosemary Margarita and Roots' Farm Food Guacamole recipes!  My stomach is already growling :)

Cheers!

Southern Soirée at The Duke Mansion

Brittney and Derek had the most amazing Spring wedding last April.  In full bloom, The Duke Mansion was it's usual stunning self (if I could spend every day there I would) and looking back on their wedding day I remember nothing but constant smiles, joy, and one heck of a celebration.  Also, their first look - one for the books.  So many happy tears (including myself and their photographer, Lauren Friday).

Each year there are a few couples I establish an especially close connection and friendship with, Brittney and Derek were one of those couples in 2016.  Because of this I think I've been subconsciously holding onto their wedding day photos waiting for the perfect time to share - in celebration of their first anniversary this weekend, it seems to finally be that time!  These two are made for one another and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know and work with them during such a special time in their lives.

PS - congratulations are in order, the newest Tar Heel will be arriving October 2017!

Duke Mansion Bridal Session

I have been holding on to Katherine's bridals for far too long!

Katherine is a gorgeous bride and The Duke Mansion was the perfect backdrop for her bridal portraits with Crystal Stokes.  Katherine & Bill's wedding at Quail Hollow Club was easily one of 2016's highlights - stay tuned for more to come featuring this wedding, but for now I'll leave you with her stunning bridal session.  Seriously, these photos are so amazing I could revisit this album every day and find a new favorite.  Enjoy!

Engaged: Gracie & Brandon

Have I mentioned that I love Winter weddings?  Gracie and Brandon's wedding day is quickly approaching and I for one can't wait.  They have done such an incredible job making their wedding one of a kind and personal to them it's going to be a pleasure watching the day unfold.  Brandon's Grandmother, Net, will be serving as their Flower Lady (have you ever heard of a more thoughtful idea?) and the two gentlemen in bowties below will be making an appearance as the ring bearers.  Oh, and these two LOVE dessert, lets just say their guests are in for a treat!

Thank you, Sunshower Photography for sharing their engagement session with us!  This time next week we'll be gearing up for their wedding weekend taking place at Byron's South End and I'm thrilled to be kicking off our 2017 season with this wedding!

Timeless Winter Wedding Inspiration

I woke up this morning to my weather app telling me Charlotte is now expected to receive 4-8" of snow tonight and tomorrow afternoon...what the what?  Good news, I love snow and will prompty turn into a little kid glued to the window as soon as the first few flakes fall.  Bad news, we're almost out of Winter/Christmas beer and how is one to have a snow party without it?  Total Wine, I will be seeing you later...here's hoping it's not quite as crazy as Harris Teeter was last night!

The Timeless Winter Wedding shoot I designed last month is perfect for a snowy day - soft, cool hues, a fur stole and blankets to keep you cozy, a touch of velvet, and hot toddies.  My goal for this shoot was to put a soft spin on winter wedding design and to say I'm pleased with how it all came together (in less than two weeks no less!) would be a huge understatement!

Fall and Spring in the Carolinas are incredibly beautiful - it can be tough to beat Carolina blue skies on your wedding day, but don't write off a Winter wedding just yet.  Overcast skies, cooler temps, and an earlier sunset create the ultimate romantic backdrop.  For anyone still on the fence about Winter weddings, I'm hopeful this shoot will make a fan out of you as well.

Enjoy the snow this weekend!

Thank You For Being A Friend

Dreaming up and designing this Golden Girls Bridal Luncheon inspiration shoot was such a treat - admittedly, I may have binge watched a few episodes as part of my "creative process"!  After creating my mood board (check it out here), what was the next step?  Bringing an all star creative team on board.  Growing up my Grandma and I were always sure to catch "the girls" when I spent the night with her, so this witty and fun show carries a bit of nostalgia for me - and what fun it was to hear similar stories from the gals on our creative team.  In addition to working with amazing creatives, I also had pleasure of seeing some of our previous SSE brides who graciously agreed to model for us.  I'm so thankful for the relationships I have built with so many brides and love that I can now call them friends.

Working with this creative team was a delight and I was so pleased to see our work featured on Wedding Chicks!

What a great way to kick off the weekend, Wedding Chicks has featured our Golden Girls inspired Bridal Luncheon today!  This shoot was near and dear to my heart and I am so happy to finally share it here

Inspiration: Thank You For Being A Friend

Like many others who grew up in the 80's & 90's certain things always take me back to my youth - Saved by the Bell, Pac Man, any Michael Jackson song, "The Rachel" haircut, ET, New Kids on the Block, Clueless, terrible 4 inch high chunky sandals (ladies in their early-mid thirties, you know what I'm talking about)...I could go on and on.  Admittedly, both MJ and NKOTB have a station on my current Pandora.  Some things are timeless after all.

Another of my all time favorite things that came from the 80's & 90's?  The Golden Girls.  As a young girl whenever I would spend the night with my Grandma I always remember we would watch an episode of the Golden Girls just before bed - how the same show could appeal to a retiree and a young girl is beyond me, but it did and I loved it.  When the idea struck to design an inspiration shoot based on the Golden Girls I was in heaven brainstorming details.

Tomorrow, Wedding Chicks will be featuring the shoot, beautifully shot by Cathy Durig Photography, don't miss it!

Urban Ethereal Wedding Inspiration

Every profession calls for occasional Continuing Education, new certifications, shadowing, etc. to sharpen your skill set and stay up to date in your market.  For those of us in the wedding industry the same can be said for Inspiration Shoots.  These shoots give us the opportunity to flex our creative muscles and create a design based entirely on personal inspiration.

When Lauren Friday and I began discussing this shoot our vision was clear - the design would have an Urban/Edgy feel, while keeping timeless details.  Once the venue (The Goodyear Building) was decided, cultivating the details was seamless.  If you aren't familiar with The Goodyear Building, it was a longstanding auto-repair shop in the heart of downtown Charlotte.  In the wake of Charlotte's growth Goodyear was sold and remained vacant for months, until becoming a residency for local artists (thanks to VTG CLT).

Fun Fact - just a few short months following the shoot our models got engaged.  Can you believe this is only their practice round in a gown and suit?

Inspiration: Urban Ethereal Wedding

When I began working on the design for a recent inspiration shoot, "Edgy Twist On A Timeless Wedding Style", featured yesterday on Fab You Bliss finding my vision didn't take long.  Producing a timeless design with an edgy twist served as my inspiration for this shoot.  While brainstorming for the decor/design it was clear that maintaining an Ethereal air of softness, highlighting timeless details, while also incorporating elements that would offer depth in an Urban/Edgy way would be a gorgeous marriage of two very different styles.

When you are in the design and decor stage of planning, Mood Boards serve as a HUGE help for your creative team.  While Pinterest Boards offer a good representation of your overall vision, my goal for your Mood Board is to cultivate details so specific to you and your fiancé that each element of your wedding is a direct representation of you two.  I focus on honing in to your specific style and highlighting details that are most true to you, whether it be through your pinterest boards, instagram posts, taste in food and music, personal style, favorite travel destinations - you name it, inspiration is everywhere.  Once we have a simplified, specific plan for your design it allows your creative team to elevate your details and decor, making your wedding truly one of a kind and personal to you and your fiancé.

On Monday I will be sharing our Urban Ethereal Shoot, so check out the Mood Board I created for it below.  The creative team did such a wonderful job of taking my vision and ideas and bringing them to life - I can't wait to share all of the details!

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with an incredibly talented creative team to pull together what LFP (Lauren Friday Photography) and I affectionately call our Ethereal Urban Inspiration Shoot.  In designing this shoot my primary focus was aligning timeless wedding style with an urban influence and I love how it turned out.  Click the link to check out our feature on Fab You Bliss and stay tuned for a full post here showcasing the entire shoot!

Engaged: Laura & Jon

It's officially wedding week for these two, so what a perfect opportunity to share their engagement session with Old South Photography!  I have been looking forward to their wedding since Laura and I first connected last Winter.  Not only are Laura and Jon both so considerate and thoughtful but they have a gorgeous vision and I can't wait to see it come to life on Saturday at the Mint Museum Uptown.  Cheers to Fall wedding season and (thankfully) gorgeous weather for their big day!

Foundation For The Carolinas Wedding

Kate and Billy tied the knot May 21st at Foundation For The Carolinas and it was the most gorgeous day in uptown Charlotte.  Working with Kate and her mom was a dream - I really loved that Kate's vision included the use of such a subtly gorgeous color scheme.  Navy, ivory, and a touch of gold (not to be confused with nautical) lent itself beautifully to create their timeless wedding decor.  Billy works in the food industry and the most important detail to him was offering their guests a unique dinner experience.  He did just that - in addition to the gorgeous wedding cake, Queen City Catering set up a liquid nitrogen ice cream sundae bar.  Yes, it was EVERYTHING.

Once again my gal Rachel Red hit it out of the park with the photos - enjoy!

Separk Mansion Bridals

So often bridal portraits are one detail of wedding planning that gets overlooked.  I always try and remind my brides that the opportunity to see yourself with wedding day hair and makeup, in your gown, holding your bouquet only adds to the excitement and anticipation, and has HUGE logistical benefits.  In addition to having another chance to wear your gown, it is a wonderful opportunity to see if there's anything that should be switched (jewelry, shoes, lip color, etc.) or if any last minute alterations need to be made.  My professional advice to all brides to be - if you have an opportunity for a bridal session, absolutely fit it into your calendar.

Kate & Billy tied the knot on May 21st at Foundation for the Carolinas and I am so excited to finally be able to share her bridal session at Separk Mansion!  We could not have asked for a more perfect day and Kate was a natural in front of Rachel Red's camera.  Enjoy!!

My Why

Today I wanted to take an opportunity to share something I've become very passionate about.  Thank you for reading my why...

About six months ago I was simply washing my face when Ryan walked in the bathroom and picked up my face cleanser.  He looked at the bottle for a few minutes, before looking at me and asking "do you realize how many ingredients are in this stuff?".  Silly me, no I did not.  I was using a well known, well respected brand...I thought there was nothing to know.  When I turned the bottle around, the ingredients (many of which I could not pronounce) list covered 3/4 of the backside and ingredient number 6 is PEG 120 - know what PEG's are?  Carcinogens.  I found a few other upsetting ingredients and that was it for me, the search for safe skincare was on.  Here's a fun fact I learned in the process, the FDA does relatively no screening of skincare products before they hit the market.  What does that mean?  In addition to the chemicals included in most products, others that have been labeled as natural or organic have not been proven to be either.

It took me over 6 weeks to find Beautycounter, but when I did I knew I had found what I was looking for.  Included on the website, in complete transparency is the Never List.  The products on that list, many of which I found in other products I used on a daily basis, will never be used in a Beautycounter product.  In addition to the never list, each product has a full ingredient list included on both the website and it's packaging.  Guys, that's a big deal.

So why am I sharing all this with you?  Many of you know I am pretty obsessive about what foods I put in my body.  Cancer and Alzheimers are not unheard of in my family, so it has long been important to me that I do everything I can to cut my risk for either.  When I am cooking I will not use anything out of a can, jar, or plastic.  I make my own sauces, tortillas, bake from scratch, etc.  Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and here I have been so worried about taking care of whats on the inside that I completely overlooked the risk to the outermost parts of my body.  Ryan pointing out just how many toxins and chemicals were in my face cleanser brought on the realization that I've got to also focus on taking care of what's on the outside, and what products I am using on it.  After spending so much time researching what products are out there I came up with only one that I feel comfortable using, Beautycounter.  It was so difficult for me to find a brand I knew was safe that it dawned on me, if I'm searching for this, others must be doing the same thing.  Safe skincare shouldn't be something we have to spend weeks looking for.

With that in mind I decided to take things one step further and become a Beautycounter consultant.  My goal is to spread awareness of safe skincare and share these amazing products with all of you.  I 100% believe in this brand and am so thankful that I realized sooner than later the impact all these products have on my health.  Bulleted below are just a few of the facts and statistics I've learned.

  • The US has not passed a federal law regulating the cosmetic industry since 1938
  • The European Union has banned nearly 1400 ingredients from cosmetics, the US has only banned or restricted 11
  • Approximately 90% of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have the BRACA gene
  • Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies (the 4As) are on the rise in the US
  • More than 200 synthetic chemicals, many known to be toxic, can be found in nearly all Americans

If you are interested in learning more or would like to try any of the products, please send me a message!

Check back tomorrow and we'll be back to posting wedding goodness!
